The map is based on Google searches of news items over the last several days (April 28-May 8) and places a single marker on the map for each news source location (i.e. where the newspaper or tv station or etc. was based). A Google News search for "WVU Garrison Bresch" yields about 2,000 hits, and other searches bring additional hits. This map uses a snapshot of Google News responses as an initial attempt to visualize the viral spread of the scandal. There's a url and title for the article attached to the markers, but there are of course many other articles and most of these sources offer several articles on the topic.

Here's a different visualization from Technorati. It graphs English-language blog posts that contain WVU Garrison per day for the last 30 days.
