:: Important Notice: Annual MIR Meeting on May 7, 2009
:: I invite you to attend the annual MIR meeting to be held on Thursday, May 7 at 10:30 AM in 202 Hodges Hall. At this meeting, we will discuss the future of MIR and will vote on a motion to dissolve it. Mike Perone and I intend to step aside as MIR officers no matter the outcome of the vote in order to direct attention to other areas of our lives.
The MIR By-Laws (copy attached) include provisions for dissolution and for officer elections, and prohibit proxy voting. If you can't attend the meeting, please join us by telephone (270-696-2525, participant code 153505).
Meeting Agenda:
1. Minutes of the October 15, 2008 meeting (Julie Patrick)
2. Chair's report (Boyd Edwards)
3. Legislative report (Barb Howe)
4. Financial report (Lisa Weihman)
5. Motion to dissolve MIR (Mike Perone)
6. Business (including election of officers if needed)
7. Adjourn
MIR was organized on May 7, 2008 to work to ensure WVU's future as a respected academic institution in the wake of the Heather Bresch scandal. MIR has focused its attention on three goals:
1. Resignation of Michael Garrison
2. Appointment of a qualified successor
3. Change the laws on WVU governance
The first two of these goals have been reached, and the third is near. Senate Bill 373, which includes provisions for greater faculty representation and diversity on the WVU Board of Governors, was passed by wide margins earlier this month in the West Virginia House and Senate. Many expect Governor Manchin to sign the bill into law. I nevertheless urge you to write to him (http://www.wvgov.org/) before his April 29 signing deadline to encourage him to sign the bill.
If MIR is to continue, it needs new goals and new leadership. Please bring to the May 7 meeting your thoughts on MIR's future and, if pertinent, your suggestions for new goals and new leadership. Is there a current need for MIR? Can standing representative bodies such as the WVU Faculty Senate fill the need? Of course, if we choose to dissolve MIR for the present, nothing would stop us from regrouping in the future if a compelling need arises.
Thank you for contributing toward WVU's recovery from what Robert Smith, WVU Professor Emeritus of History, deemed "the most serious crisis that WVU has ever faced in its long history." Your voice, in concert with thousands of others, has truly made a difference.
Cheers and best,
Boyd Edwards
